Solution Scenario 3

Problem

How can we guarantee that our package selection is the best fit for our organisation minimising the typical high costs of customisation? How much will the customisation really cost? How well will the package fit with our current applications?

Solution

Step 1 – Package Evaluation & Selection

  1. Look under the covers of the package – find out what it really provides
  2. Don’t rely on the screens, reports and functional specification
  3. Know what the package really does
  4. Use business blueprint to find the gaps in each package; find out before you choose
    1. What does each package do well?
    2. What does each package do reasonably?
    3. What does each package not do at all?
    4. What can the package never do?
    5. Whether the gaps are best filled by another package or customisation
    6. The cost of customisation
    7. Required interfaces and therefore cost upfront
    8. The total cost of the package implementation, including interfaces

Step 2 - Implement Package

  1. Customisation project will be managed against defined gap functionality
  2. Change Requests will be assessed against known package functionality
  3. Providing check points throughout entire package implementation
  4. Engagement options being:
    1. UTelco being the SI
    2. UTelco providing governance working with existing SI
    3. UTelco working with our Partners with flexible engagement options
